Poll result: Hart scoops vote by tiny majority

Last updated : 09 May 2005 By Rob Davies
The poll, at least, did have one purpose. It illustrated that this is the most wide open race for the manager's chair the club has had in years. There is simply no obvious front-runner.

Hart: The victor
Not only was this shown in the result, but also in the fact that - despite including FOURTEEN possible options - we at NCM missed a few top candidates when deciding on our options.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing, ofcourse, but names mentioned in the NEP this week in relation to the job this week, Gudjon Thordason, Chris Turner, Steve Thompson (No, please!), Chris Turner and Brian Flynn were all omitted from our original list. Ah, well.

Two of the names mentioned in our poll - Keith Curle and Brian Talbot - have also gone and got themselves jobs at Chester and Oxford respectively so can be discounted.

So, we come to the polls three frontrunners.

Hart - despite being fiercely opposed on certain sections of the NCM messageboard - crept into an early lead and never let it slip, polling 20.7% of the vote.

Despite being touted in media circles as the chief candidate for the job though, the former Reds boss is thought to have opted against applying - and is now not thought to be a candidate.

Second-placed former Watford boss Ray Lewington IS thought to have applied, but is thought to be behind names such as Thordason, Thompson (no!) and Flynn in the race for the job. Bizarre.

And third-placed Bruce Rioch is also thought to have decided against applying, despite being a long-time out-of-work.

So, all in all, the poll doesn't show all that much. Better just to leave it to the professionals in future.
