Planning ahead

Looking ahead: McParland is considering bringing Wedderburn to the club again next season on loan.
Ian McParland appears to be setting his sights on his transfer targets for next year's campaign already.

It appears that the management team are eyeing up moves for both Nat Wedderburn and Phil Picken.

Stoke City starlet Wedderburn extended his loan for another month today, which will keep him at the club until March 3.

But, McParland hopes that a deal can be struck to bring the youngster on a longer term basis next season should he continue to impress.

Speaking to the Nottingham Evening Post, he said: "Nat has done well for us. He's a young lad who is learning his trade but make no mistake about it he can have a very bright future in the game.

"He's been unlucky not to start more often but when he returned from injury John Thompson and Adam Nowland were performing well in midfield.

"Nat has been patient and when he has come off the bench his performances have been good.

"He's now got another month to gain some more experience and I'm sure he will play his part."

Assistant-manager Dave Kevan's comments also signal that Chesterfield defender Picken may be recruited on permanent terms if an arrangement can be met.

"Phil's done very well for us and has settled in very quickly at the club. We're pleased that can continue," he explained.

"Securing a deal for him until the end of the season gives us a great chance to assess him even more.

"He'll still be under contract at Chesterfield in the summer so we'll need to address that nearer the time."

In the mean time it seems that County are not giving up their hopes of landing Scunthorpe's Jonathan Forte on an emergency loan deal.

The 22-year-old impressed greatly in his previous spell with the Magpies and has made just two substitute appearances since returning to his parent club.
