Old pals' act for Stall

With the Magpies alarming run of just one win in their last 13 league games plunging them into relegation trouble, all eyes were on Rushden's trip to the fast-finishing Shews this evening.

Barry Hunter's struggling Rushden side had hoped to use this evening's game - their game in hand on the Magpies - to climb their way out of the bottom two, but were no match for Shrewsbury - who still hold hopes of gate-crashing the playoffs after a rich vein of form.

And it was Stallard - still fondly-remembered in these parts - who came to the Magpies rescue, scoring early in both the first and second periods to crush any hopes the Diamonds may have had.

Even a goal from another ex Magpie - Rushden's Darren Caskey - wasn't enough to halt the Stallard-led Shrews, who also contained Glynn Hurst in their ranks.

Hurst left Meadow Lane in January, but is still the club's leading scorer with nine goals.
