Notts to rekindle interest in Birgisson?

Last updated : 03 January 2006 By Richard Brown

With Glynn Hurst’s contract termination believed to have freed up as much as £1,500 early last week, the club now have to assess their options – and indeed the capabilities of their current squad – during the mid-season transfer opening

Birgisson: Interested in move
And, with manager Gudjon Thordarson having again revealed his decision to make a move for a ‘striker of some repute’ during January, it seems as though the Magpies faithful could well be introduced to a new player or three by as early as Saturday – such is Gudjon’s eagerness to improve his side’s fortunes in front of goal.

Having seen Saul Deeney, Shane McFaul, Ian Richardson, Ruben Zadkovich, and, now, Hurst all cut-off from the wage bill, Thordarson now seems poised to make at least two additions to his squad, with a number of non-contracted players already having registered with the club this season.

One such addition, as predicted by the Icelandic media, is 22-year old Icelandic midfielder, Birgisson, who Gudjon took on trial late-on last year. And, with Gudjon known to be sniffing out a deal, the Icelandic press are predicting Notts to revive their interests in the midfielder.

The former Fram and Vikingur midfielder, who is currently a free agent after refusing an extension on his one-season deal in his native Iceland, will come highly-rated from his homeland, with Birgisson already having expressed an interest in signing for his fellow countrymen’s League Two outfit.

"It went well and I’m satisfied with how I did over there. It was hard at first, as I did not know the players. The pace is very high over there, but it was OK," said Birgisson, speaking to the Icelandic media recently.

"It’s difficult to say at this moment whether or not a deal will materialise, but there is interest from both parties – all will be revealed come January."
