Notts offer Deeney new deal

If reports in today’s Nottingham Evening Post are anything to go by, then the Magpies could be close to securing the future of 22-year old Irish goalkeeper, Saul Deeney.

The youngster, who has rose to prominence at Meadow Lane after three seasons of vegetating on the sidelines, has proven his worth to the Magpies this season, confiriming the widespread belief in the player who has been with the club since signing as a teenager.

With the youngster's current deal set to expire in the summer, manager Richardson has been reported to have offered the Republic of Ireland under-21 ‘keeper a new deal with the club that will, if he accepts, keep him with the club until the summer of 2007.

The highly-rated shot-stopper – who, over the last few seasons, has enjoyed trial periods with Premiership clubs Blackburn Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers – would be free to leave the club in the summer, with Notts being entitled only to an unpredictable amount of compensation with the player still being under the age of 24.

The latest reports slightly contradict the views issued in NCM’s exclusive interview with director, Steve Thompson earlier this month, who claimed the future of any players out of contract would be discussed later in April.

This latest news also throws the future of midfield duo Stef Oakes and Paul Bolland very much up in the air, with no news yet to have filtered through about new deals for the duo.

With the club looking to tighten its finance program, however, both - should they be prepared to do so - may well be offered deals on reduced terms.

Speaking to the Nottingham Evening Post earlier today, Magpies boss Richardson said, "We have offered Saul a new deal. He is a player we want to keep at the club.

"He is out of contract in the summer, but he has done well for us.

"He deserves a new deal and we are hopeful that something can be agreed."
