Notts face 500 mile cup trip

Well, it's been the first week when the new season really begins to seem close, with the draw for the Carling Cup first round and the release of the fixture list for the new campaign. There was mixed news for Notts in this, with a truly horrendous draw in the supposedly regionalised Carling Cup, but a pretty favourable fixture list all round.

Inexplicably placed in the Southern section of the draw, Notts were effectively denied any hope of a good draw, with the nearest possible tie being Milton Keynes Dons, a good 80 miles away. In the end it was the longest treck in the draw, which had a certain inevitability about it. The Magpies will travel to Home Park in the first week of the season to take on Plymouth Argyle.

The fixture list brought better news however, with an opening day clash against Huddersfield Town likely to draw a large crowd to Meadow Lane. The Magpies are also at home on Boxing Day, to Rochdale, and on the final day of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion. The first away game sees a trip north to face Oldham Athletic.
