Notts County v Shrewsbury Town build up

Last updated : 27 August 2008 By Dane Vincent

With all hopes of an exciting cup run were blown to smithereens by a ruthless Wigan Athletic last night, it is now time to focus on the most important thing - the league.

Windfall: Shrewsbury have made over £600,000 so far from the sale of Hart...
Notts have been faced with a tough start, taking on some of League Two's finest in the opening few games.

The fixture list is not doing the Magpies any favours in their hunt for a first league win of the season, with table topping Shrewsbury Town providing the next challenge.

Paul Simpson made some shrewd signings over the summer, using the cash from Joe Hart's lucrative switch the Premiership side, Manchester City.

Among these are record signing, Grant Holt and former Bristol Rovers hit-man, Richard Walker (loan), forming a very dangerous attacking force at this level of the game.

The Shrews are proving a resolute defensive unit as well, and are yet to concede a goal in their opening three league games.

In these outings, they have overcome Macclesfield Town (4-0), Exeter City (1-0), and Aldershot Town (1-0).

On paper this may not be the hardest set of fixtures, but Shrewsbury will be

on a high, and will no doubt prove tricky opponents.

It was the Magpies who came out on top in this fixture last season, claiming a 2-1 over the visitors, with Krystian Pearce and Neil Mackenzie helping Notts to fight back from a 45th minute Dave Hibbert strike.

In fact, Notts have not lost to the Shrews in the last five fixtures at Meadow Lane, winning three and drawing two since the 2-1 defeat back in 1996.

Overall, things have been quite even in the 36 games between the two sides, with 12 County wins, 12 Town wins and 12 draws.

Shrewsbury are flying at the moment, but are debatably in for their strongest opponents yet.

Notts have been putting together some impressive displays so far and will be hoping to convert one into a win very soon, before morale begins to erode.

The major factor preventing turning these draws into wins is the team's cutting edge in front of goal.

Should that be resolved this weekend, County could well walk away with their first three points of the season.
