Notts County v Chesterfield match ratings

Josh Lillis 6 - Most of his involvement involved sweeping up long balls over the top of the defence. His communication with the back four was questionable as there were several moments of misunderstanding. Darting sharply off his line he managed to bail out those in front of him on occasions.

Phil Picken 7 - Quite possibly his best game in the black and white stripes against his parent club. He looked assured in possession and comfortable in

his defensive duties. More displays of this nature would make him an attractive summer signing.

Michael Edwards 5 - An unsettling display by the team's captain whose performance dipped dramatically after the break. Simple distribution and composure was replaced by worrying decision making and horrible judgement. He should have netted in the first period but sliced terribly from close range.

Michael Johnson 6 - Won the award for best challenge of the afternoon when he powerfully yet fairly scythed down Martin Gritton. Committing himself to offensive set-pieces, he looked to be the only player who would latch onto anything in such situations. At several points he covered well, disposing of long balls efficiently.

Jamie Clapham 5 - It might have been a totally different game if his out-swinging effort had shaved the other side of the post. Unfortunately he failed to combine effectively with Weston as he has done in previous games, meaning that Notts' attacking threat down the left was hampered. Arguably he could have dealt with Drewe Talbot better for the goal.

Matthew Hamshaw 5 - It turned out to be a very frustrating afternoon for the right-sided player who saw many of his passes go astray and his deliveries - apart from a couple of early dead ball kicks - produce nothing of note. A couple of promising runs brightened up a disappointing display from the former Mansfield wide-man.

John Thompson 7 *STAR MAN* - Popped up at several moments of danger inside the penalty area and nearly came close to equalising up the other end. His looping attempt agonisingly clipped outside of the far post and was the only promising effort in the second half. He looked very assured in

possession, fooling Chesterfield's central players with a selection of clever turns.

Adam Nowland 6 - Was sadly removed through injury after such a promising opening where he linked up play smartly. An incredible stop by Tommy Lee in the visitors' goal prevented him from opening his Magpies' account. Hopefully his hamstring problem will not be too serious.

Myles Weston 5 - The Spireites full-back, Dan Gray showed exactly why Picken was allowed to join County on loan. Alongside Talbot he was able to prevent the in-form winger from excelling for the vast majority - bar a few slips in the first half.

Jamie Forrester 5 - Looked a totally different player in front of goal from the striker that fired a hat-trick last weekend. Failing to tuck away a one-on-one with the game tied proved costly in the end. His build-up play was tidy at times but nowhere near consistent enough.

Delroy Facey 5 - Faded in and out of the game and, apart from a few clever flick-ons, went missing for much of the second period. Usually dominant in physical tussles with defenders, the powerful target-man struggled to impose himself on the game.

Subs:

Nathaniel Wedderburn 5 - Took a long time to get into the game but never shirked his responsibilities, despite being off the pace. Produced a few effective surges forward but was a long way from his best.

Sean Canham 5 - Had an opportunity but his header failed to trouble the keeper. There was no doubting his effort but he appeared to be lacking match sharpness.
