Notts County v Accrington Stanley match ratings

Oh dear: Pilkington should have done better with the opener.
Kevin Pilkington 4 - Should have done better for the goal which was the only decent effort on target by the visitors. The former Mansfield stopper appeared to be flat-footed when the stinging effort was fired almost straight at him, but rather than push it away he could only palm it into his own net.

Phil Picken 6 - Intercepted well on numerous occasions to cut out potential danger and overlapped eagerly to support attacks down the right. You cannot fault his determination but his distribution became a little erratic as the game progressed.

Mike Edwards 5 - Lost his marker late on through a lack of concentration, which nearly led to Stanley claiming all three points. Notts do look stronger defensively with him at the back but the 'Steady Eddy' of old is still missing. He came close with a couple of offensive headers and won his fair share at the back too.

Michael Johnson 6 - Needed to do much better when he headed the ball harmlessly wide early on when he found himself unmarked inside the opposition's six-yard box. Defensively he acted cleverly and rarely seemed troubled.

Jamie Clapham 5 - Popped up on the goal-line make a superb clearance in the first period. Besides that he failed to impose himself until late in the game when he began to drive forward to support forward play with some decent runs. Some dramatically mishit clearances summed up the majority of his afternoon.

Matthew Hamshaw 7 - Put in some great set-pieces that didn't end in the manner they deserved. He worked tirelessly all afternoon making some jinking runs, attempting to make something happen. Unfortunately he

appeared to grow frustrated by the lack of co-operation from his team mates, who were often static.

Adam Nowland 4 - Started brightly with some tidy passing but faded quickly after Accrington took the lead. He appeared at least partly at fault for the strike as he gave Jimmy Ryan too much space, allowing him to steady himself to get the shot in.

John Thompson 5 - Although anonymous for large sections of the game he continued to give the Magpies some much needed height in the centre. As usual he covered well defensively and had two good opportunities up the other end that he narrowly failed to convert.

Myles Weston 5 - Delivered a fantastic ball onto Facey's head for the equaliser but apart from that was largely ineffective. Shirking several challenges he failed to aid defensively and many of his runs were scuppered. He missed an absolute sitter from close-range, which he somehow cleared the crossbar and should have broken through on another occasion, only to waste it with his refusal to use his right foot.

Jonathan Forte 4 - Although he worked hard to link up play and spark the game into life it never came off. This wasn't helped by the frequent long ball that was aimed towards his head, revealing that aerial presence is not his biggest strength. He looks a far better player with the ball at his feet.

Delroy Facey 5 - Converted a brilliant header to salvage a point for his team. For the majority, however, he struggled to hold the ball up and his flick-ons mainly ended up in the possession of the visitors. Like Forte, he was not helped by the gap between the forwards and the midfield.

Subs:

Richard Butcher 5 - Might have entered the Guinness Book of World Records for highest shot ever recorded when his volley somehow managed to loop onto the roof of the Kop. Apart from that 'effort' he managed to get into some decent positions and made the team look more dangerous in the final third despite the aforementioned accolade.
