Notts' back four

The Magpies' left-back has been impressed by the way Steve Jenkins and Tony Barras have settled themselves into the Magpies back four. ‘Nicho’ believes Billy Dearden's side will have a tight defence as a result of their arrival – despite the fact that the Magpies have conceded 6 goals in just two league games.

In an interview with the Evening Post, Nicholson said; "In the short time we have been together, during pre-season and the first few matches of the campaign we have started to develop an understanding.

"Steve and Tony have both settled into things very well and even when he is having a bad day, Nicky is a very good defender.

"Hopefully that will continue for some time to come although with Ian Richardson around you know there is going to be a fight for places."

Nicholson has also been impressed by Dearden’s other new signings, winger Simon Baldry and striker Clive Platt. And he believes, with a little good fortune, they are equipped for life in the Second Division.

"The players that have been brought to the club over the summer all look to be good signings and if we could name the same team every week for the rest of the season, we would fancy our chances.

"But once a couple of injuries or suspensions kick in, that is when we are going to have a problem."

The former Northampton and Sheffield Wednesday player also believes Notts are on the right track, despite their lack of goals.

"We have defended well - aside from at Bristol - through pre-season and in the first few matches," he said. But if we can defend like we did at Preston and create as many chances as we did against Wrexham - and actually manage to put a few of them away - we can progress this season.

"We know we can do it, we have shown what we are capable of. We just need to start doing it consistently. And a little luck along the way would help."

However, when Saturday’s visit to Swindon was raised, Nicholson admits the Magpies have a point to prove.

"It was one of the worst performances of last season," he said. "I don't think any of us can claim that we played well there.

"Defeat at Swindon was painful and it is hard to explain why we were so poor. But hopefully that will be forgotten by the time the game is over tomorrow."
