Needham originally joined the club last summer on a trial basis but the club, at that time, were not able to offer terms to the former Sheffield Wednesday youngster, and so he was released from his trial here.

However, after funds were freed up mid-season, boss Gudjon Thordarson was able to follow up his initial interest in the player, plucking him from Conference North outfit Gainsborough Trinity where he had dwelled since consecutive releases from Wednesday and, of course, his trial at the ‘Lane.

The player was signed initially on non-contract forms, before being offered terms until the end of the season where the midfielder-cum-wing back has gone on to make 21 league starts for the Magpies.

Having sufficiently impressed Thordarson and his backroom staff, the versatile 20-year old has today inked a new one-year deal with the club, having escaped Gudjon Thordarson's seven-man exodus last week.

Needham becomes the fifth player to be contracted with the club beyond the summer, with Kevin Pilkington, David Pipe, Dan Martin and YTS graduate Tommy Hannigan all having agreed extended terms within the past few weeks.
