Neck and neck as big boys eye the finish line

With the big interest of the play-off chase in recent weeks, it has somewhat been forgotten that the battle for the title couldn't be any closer.

Just two points separate leaders Hartlepool and second placed Walsall.

This weekend could see both sides promoted, but that isn't all at stake as manger's Danny Wilson and Richard Money have a keen eye on silverware.

An unbeaten run of 23 games for Hartlepool United has seen them rocket from the fringes of play-off football to runaway leaders at the top, but a shock defeat against Barnet on Monday has opened things right up again.

Walsall have led at the top for sometime this season but can be forgiven for surrendering that place to what has been a far superior United side of late.

But last week's 2-1 loss at Underhill for the Pool leaves the Championship race really wide open.

After such a dazzling run, Wilson is determined his side clinch

Wilson...Eyes on ultimate prize
League Two's ultimate prize as a marker of his first season in charge. Hartlepool face Wycombe at Adams Park tomorrow and the win will be far from routine for the table toppers as they take on the eighth placed promotion chasing Wanderers.

A draw will be enough for Hartlepool to secure a place in League One next season but dropping any points could gift advantage to the lurking Saddlers.

Wilson
told the BBC: "We are hoping to kill two birds with one stone - three points would get us up and put us in a strong position for the title.

"Getting promoted would be great, but what is really driving us on is getting our hands on that title."

Wycombe has not been a happy hunting ground for many teams this season as they've lost just two at Adams Park since back in September of last year. Wilson may wish to exchange pre-match notes will Bristol Rovers' Paul Trollope however, who has seen his Pirates twice conquer Wycombe, once on route to the Johnstone Paint Trophy Final and more recently in the league just two weeks ago.

Even Premiership Champions Chelsea could only manage a draw on their trip to their fellow Londoner's.

That fine record aside, The Chairboys themselves have won just game in 2007 at home, in a run that has seen them fast
become the draw specialist's of League Two.

For tomorrow's game, Tommy Mooney returns for Wycombe having been rested for their Monday clash with Grimsby. As for the Pool, they will be boosted by the return of skipper Micky Barron having missed the last two games with a groin problem.

Meadow Lane...set to host Walsall

The likely outcome of the draw would be just about perfect as far as Walsall are concerned leaving them the chance to go level on points with United providing they turn over Notts County at Meadow Lane.

Magpies fans are expected to turn out in huge numbers for their must win game tomorrow with the Saddlers. Defeat would end County's play-off hopes and leave them destined for another
season in the mediocrity of League Two.

Steve Thompson's men will need no better incentive.

Four straight wins for Notts all of which have produced clean sheets make for a difficult game for Walsall, but a hurdle they must still overcome.

But, with just one win in the last six for Walsall on their travels, it would be an understatement to say the Saddlers have struggled for form of late. They'll be hoping the return of defender Allan Picken will help put their poor away form right.

But with two wins over the Easter weekend for both sides, this game really could go either way.

The title hangs in the balance and with Wycombe and Notts determined to hunt down the final play-off place, this weekend could yet again prove there are no easy games in League Two.
