NCM's Player of the Weekend is...

Grimsby Town left-back Tom Newey is the latest in a long line of League Two men to net this accolade after having a starring role in the Mariners' 2-1 win over Hereford United on Saturday.

Newey, 24, created one and scored the other and dominated the game from his defensive position.

Always probing, always willing, Newey got top marks in all quarters for his showing that was ever so important for Alan Buckley's side as it was their first back to back wins since March and first home win of the campaign.

The scoring was opened by Danny Boshell just twenty minutes in at Blundell Park after Newey found him with a deliciously enticing cross.

Newey himself then made the game virtually safe with a 51st minute second direct from a free-kick on the edge of the area. A Trevor Benjamin consolation for the Bulls, who visit Meadow Lane on Tuesday, was never going to be enough.

Newey started his career at Leeds United when the Elland Road outfit were doing well in the Premiership, but he never figured and was farmed out on loan to Cambridge United and Darlington before joining Leyton Orient in 2003.

He was fairly successful there making 54 appearances in two seasons before re-joining Cambridge, this time permanently in 2005 after another loan spell there.

However, under Thompson the U's were relegated out of the Football League and the Mariners stepped in for the highly rated star.

He is into his second full season with Town now, and is looking every ince the quality full-back he is, particularly on Saturday's match winning evidence.
