NCM Select: Ben Fairclough

Youth: Fairclough still has time to improve.
He may have only featured in a handful of games but it appears that Ben Fairclough could have a future with the Magpies.

Last week Ian McParland revealed that he was pleased with the way that both the former Forest forward and Sean Canham had both improved since joining the club in the summer.

"They have progressed a lot but they could have progressed even more if they had played more reserve games," he said speaking to the Nottingham Evening Post.

"Ben has played a bit-part role in the first-team.

"If they had played 12 to 15 games, while they have not been in the team, it would have improved them more.

He also hinted that the teenager could be offered a new deal as he attempts to bridge the divide between the re-introduced youth setup and the first team.

He added: "I want to bring a couple more youngsters in next season."

Many thought that Fairclough was going to be released in January when his contract expired due to his lack of involvement.

However, his stay was extended and he has now managed to make a total of nine appearances in all competitions, including two starts.

Although he has failed to hit the target in those games he did show a degree of sharpness in front of goal in pre-season, where he netted twice in five games.

Do you believe that the nippy striker-come-winger should remain part of the squad for next season? Even just as a back-up player?
