Millsy gets his man

Hurst, who finished last season as Chesterfield's top scorer with 13 goals, was involved in lengthy talks with Notts manager Gary Mills yesterday and agreed a deal, in principle, that will keep him at the club for two years.

On name at least, this represents possibly Mills' best signing of the summer so far, especially as Hurst was offered deals by a number of club's in higher leagues, including a fresh one from Chesterfield.

But the 28-year-hisold hitman instead chose to make Notts eighth club of his near-10 year professional career. And he insists that he came to Meadow Lane because Notts County are a club going places.

"I scored 13 goals in a struggling side last season," Hurst told the NEP. "In fact, I scored 13 goals in 20 appearances, in the second half of the season, after being out with injury. And I was very pleased with that.

"Hopefully, playing in a side that is doing well I can score a lot more.

"And I do believe this is going to be a successful team. That is why I came here.

"I am getting to the stage in my career where I want to be winning things.

"People will wonder why I am dropping down to the Third Division but I believe I am taking one step back to take a couple forward in the future."

Hurst was sent off when the Spirerites visited Meadow Lane earlier in the season for a petulant headbutt on David Pipe, but he insists that won't be a problem.

"The first person I will be shaking hands with is David Pipe," said Hurst. "I was out of order that day and I know it.

"It really wasn't like me, but I will be apologising to him."

Well, a few early goals, Glynn, and the Notts fans might just forgive you. A 'Who R ya' on Hurst will be on NCM shortly.
