Rumours have been speculating about Johnson, who has had spells at Derby, Aston Villa and Celtic as well as Notts, returning to Meadow Lane for sometime now.

But it is only since the sale of Mark Stallard to Barnsley that things ahve really got kicking, with some people even expecting Johnson to be back for Saturday's clash against Swindon.

Mills told the club's official website: "It's just a case of getting things sorted at Gillingham's end."

"We have done all the talking. Tommy is top of my list and I am hoping to bring him in, but if I can't bring him in then I'll look elsewhere.

"I will do all I can to get him here and we are doing our best to try and get him."

There's little doubt that Johnson's return would give the whole place a huge lift, especially with Notts looking extremely blunt upfront on Saturday.

Tommy and Heff, anyone?
