Mills Reflects On Cherries Defeat

After conceding yet another late goal Gary Mills admitted the defeat was hard to take, especially after Notts had NINE attempts on goal, with leading scorer Paul Heffernan going the closest to scoring when his superb effort hit the woodwork 30 seconds before the Cherries went ahead.

While Bournemouth had only TWO shots on goal, one of which was the goal they scored to claim all 3 points.

“To lose the match with their only shot on target they had in the second half is very hard to take. I really felt we were going to go on and win it, I really did. We kept big Fletcher quiet and I thought with him quiet we had a real chance of taking the points.” Gary Mills told the Club’s Official Website after the match.

But while Mills felt Notts could go on to win the game; he was quick to praise the young side, in particular 16 year old David McGoldrick who made his first full debut in the Notts senior team.
He was pleased with the performance of the team overall but felt that Notts were the better side and more goal scoring opportunities. Mills went on to say:

“In the second half I fully believed we were the better side, and we had the better chances. Possibly with a bit more experience with the younger boys we could have gone on to win it.”

“I thought we played really well, although we should have been one or two goals up before we went 1-0 down. It makes the defeat very difficult to take but we will keep battling away, starting with our next game against Stockport.”

Mills was not only impressed with the youngsters, but also with the performance of the returning central defender Tony Barras, who was not only standing in for the suspended Ian Richardson but also ‘stand-in’ captain for the day.

Barras: Praised For His Superb Performance

“I thought Tony Barras was excellent on Saturday against the big man Steve Fletcher. I asked him to put in a massive performance for us at
Bournemouth, and I thought he did that.” said Mills after Saturday’s match.

Barras had come in for some weighty criticism in recent weeks from the Notts boss after failing to recover from an ankle injury and serving the suspension for his red card in the FA Cup fixture at Middlesbrough but after Saturday’s performance he will now be causing Gary Mills a selection headache for the centre of defence roles ahead of the home fixture this Saturday against Stockport County.
