Mills issues Deeney challenge

The Irish stopper has been in outstanding form since replacing the impressive Wayne Henderson - whose loan spell was abruptly cut short due to an injury at his club Aston Villa - between the sticks.

Mills: Issuing challenge
The 21-year-old keeper has stepped into his countryman's shoes with ease. The under-21 international was the club's one shining light during the 3-1 derby defeat at Mansfield, keeping the scoreline respectable. And he has followed that up with two competent displays at Meadow Lane, in the 1-1 draw against Darlington and Saturday's 2-1 win over Boston Utd.

But, while Mills was keen to praise the young keeper, he stated that: "It is time to prove you're more than just a player with potential."

Deeney has long been touted as a player with outstanding potential since signing as a 17-year-old 5 years ago. However, he has been unable to make the vital step-up and has yet to cement his place in the team. Though, all that could change in the next few weeks.

"Saul has done very well since coming back into the side," Mills told the NEP.

"He deserves credit for the performances he has put in during the past three matches.

"But that does not mean he can rest on his laurels.

"He's been regarded as a player with a lot of potential for several years," Mills continued.

"People have been talking about him for a while and he's been on the fringes of the first-team squad for a long time.

"But now is the time for him to show he can do it consistently.

"He deserves praise, without question, but he has to keep working."

Deeney will have a chance to continue his good form on Saturday when Notts take on Rushden & Diamonds. We wish him luck.
