Clive began his career at Walsall, signing professional forms in August 1995 and could never really force himself into the starting eleven on a regular basis in four years at the Bescot Stadium, scoring 5 goals in 43 appearances.

At the start of the 1999-2000 season Clive joined Third Division Rochdale on loan and scored 3 goals in 6 games, which prompted Dale to pay £100,000 for his services, big money in the lower leagues.

The tall striker scored just seven more goals that season, ending up with a total of 10 goals and it was the same amount that he netted during the 2000-2001 season as Rochdale pushed for the playoff places.

2001-2002 saw Clive net just 8 goals for Rochdale, and last season he netted 9 goals as Dale had disappointing season, finishing midtable despite a good cup run which saw them make it to Round 4 before leaving on a free transfer during the summer, and after turning down moves to Bristol Rovers and Grimsby Town, it looks as if he could well be staying at Meadow Lane once the club comes out of administration.

He made 188 appearances for Rochdale, scoring 34 goals.
