Match ratings v Doncaster Rovers

Last updated : 13 August 2008 By Andrew Dennis

Reading the national newspapers you would not realise that Notts County had pulled off a fantastic win against Championship outfit, Doncaster Rovers.

The match was sparked into life by the promising livewire that is Myles Weston, after he came off the bench to score the only goal of the game, sending Notts through into the second round of the Carling Cup.

Here are the match ratings from last night's inspiring performance…

Star man: Smith made the through pass to Weston to create Notts' goal...
Pilkington 6 - Not really troubled, bar one tip over the crossbar during the first half. He visibly increased in confidence as the game went on as Doncaster faded as an attacking force.

Beardsley 7
- Performed strongly against Roberts, a left back who loved to get forward down the wing. He did everything that he needed to do, and only missed one header all night.

Edward 7
- Not called "Steady Eddie" for nothing. Captain Fantastic led the line, and his only blip was fluffing his lines at the vital moment, firing over from inside the box with only the keeper to beat.

Tann 7
- Had a quiet game, but dealt with Heffernan and Hayter effectively. Has to learn not to lead with his arms though!

Mayo 7 - He had one of his best games in a Notts shirt this evening. Ran tirelessly down the wings to support Weston/Fairclough, and didn't make many defensive mistakes. Keep it up please, Paul.

Butcher 8 -
A good performance from Butcher, who passed the ball around confidently, giving it away a lot less often than usual, and tackled when he needed to.

Smith 9 (
STAR MAN) - Best performance in a Notts shirt from Jay Smith, who tackled, harried the opposition, passed the ball around all night, showed excellent skills, set up Myles Weston's winning goal, and nearly scored himself. Fantastic!

Mackenzie 8 -
The final part of the Notts midfield passed the ball round equally as well as his colleagues, and was unlucky not to find the net with a well placed free kick in the first half. He improved as the match went on.

Weir-Daley 5 -
A quiet performance from Spencer, who struggled to get into the game, and was rightfully subbed for Myles Weston early in the second half. Looks like the subs bench beckons again for SWD this season.

Fairclough 5 -
Struggled to make any impact in the game. He looked weak on the ball and out of his depth. Will need to do better to get back in the team.

Facey 7 -
Threw himself around with enthusiasm, winning headers and

Electric: Weston's pace was terrifying the Rovers' defence...
showing surprising skill for a such a big man. He is clearly unfit, but it was a good home debut for the striker.

Subs:

Weston 9 - Myles pushes Jay Smith close in the Star Man stakes. Completely ran the show when he came on. Weston will terrorise League Two if Notts can keep him fit. He is finally showing the potential everyone saw when he first signed. He took players on, showing pace, and scored a cracking goal.

Hamshaw 7 -
Hamshaw was eclipsed by Weston, but showed neat touches after coming on, aiding the Notts attacks when needed, but wasn't needed that often!

Canham 7 -
On his home debut, Sean Canham showed the reasons why Notts "splashed out" £5,000 for him. He didn't lose a header all night, ran tirelessly for the ball and made a nuisance of himself. Promising.

The draw for the second round will take place later tonight.
