Match Ratings - vs. T'Barnsley

Last updated : 31 August 2003 By Richard Brown

Mildenhall - kept the Magpies in the game
Stephen Mildenhall – 8 – Made crucial saves throughout the game, helpless in the goal, kept Notts in the game.

Paul Riley – 5/6 – Look misplaced on the left side of midfield, constantly squeezed out of the game by the
Barnsley defence.

Steve Jenkins – 7/8 – Played the captain’s role to perfection, all over the right side of the park. Showed a good understanding with Simon Baldry on the right flank with delicate passes and a series of effective overlapping runs. Played the long ball to Clive Platt that lead to the equaliser.

Tony Barras – 6 – Looked solid once again at the back, although partly to blame to for the goal.

Nick Fenton – 6 – Looked shaky and also to blame for Gorre’s goal. A rare display of uncertainity from our assured centre back.

Ian Richardson – 7 – Showed raw commitment throughout the game and for many parts of the game was the Magpies best player. A mystery as to why he played at left back and even more of a puzzle when Richo was substituted.

Darren Caskey – 6 – After an inspiring performance at home to Peterborough United, but let himself down on the road at
Barnsley. Although he did lead the team forward from the middle of the park.

Ian Baraclough – 6 – Gave another solid performance in midfield. Tracks back well for the Magpies but is appeared also pretty useful going forward.

Paul Bolland – 6 – Showed no signs of any spectacular moves but it certainly is a another consistent performer for Notts.

Simon Baldry – 8 – Again proved a handful for the
Barnsley defence, played incisive crosses from the right flank and showed an understanding with Steve Jenkins. Hopefully Notts will secure a long term contract with the winger after the club [hopefully] sort out their financial plight.

Clive Platt – 8 – Looks to have found his strike partner in the form of Paul Heffernan. Set up the young Irish man’s goal with one of his flicked headers. His hold up play proved effective once again but unfortunately was constantly restrained by the fact that he was the lone striker for Notts.

Kevin Nicholson (Richardson ’62) – 6 – Was turned inside out for Barnsley’s goal but apart from that he looked effective in a wing back role for the final 25 minutes.

Paul Heffernan (Paul Riley ’70) – 7 – Made a nuisance of himself when he was introduced and proved to be in the right place at the right time for the Magpies. Pace looked to cause unsettle the
Barnsley back four and will be dearly missed when his suspension kicks in after the Luton clash on Saturday.

Michael Brough (Baraclough ‘83) – 6 – Little time to impress

Subs not used : Stuart Garden [GK], Shane McFaul
