Magpies hoping for first win against Luton

Last updated : 22 August 2008 By Dane Vincent

A lot can change in five years and tomorrow's clash between Notts County and Luton Town shows that.

Danger: Parkin's goal knocked Plymouth out of the Carling Cup...
Back in 2003, the Magpies were in administration for over a year and on the brink of extinction.

The home tie with the Hatters was potentially the club's last.

Since then there has been a role reversal, with Luton feeling the strains of a spell under the administrators.

After coming out of administration without agreeing a Company Voluntary Agreement with their creditors - breaking Football League rules - the club was hit with a 20 point penalty.

Prior to this, Luton had already been deducted ten points for transfer infringements, meaning that they started the season on minus 30.

Although a club in turmoil, Town have managed to pick up back-to-back wins, knocking Plymouth Argyle out of the Carling Cup and defeating Gillingham 1-0 to pick up their first points of the season last week.

Luton will be a side coming out all guns blazing this year as they know that only a promotion worthy season will be able to prevent them from avoiding the drop out of the Football League.

Team News
Notts County
go into the game with no fresh injury worries, meaning that Gavin Strachan (hamstring) and Stephen Hunt (groin) are still the only players sidelined.

Jason Beardsley will remain in the side, having agreed to remain on loan at Notts until at least January.

Following last week's draw with Darlington, it would not be surprising if Ian McParland names the same starting line-up for the third league game in a row, to help his side to mould together.

Sean Canham may feature at some point as a substitute, having failed to

New boy: Logan may make his debut in goal for Luton...
appear last weekend.

Spencer Weir-Daley did not impress greatly when coming off the bench on Saturday, meaning the ex-Team Bath striker may get the nod ahead of him.

Luton Town may throw new loan signing from Leicester City, Conrad Logan, into the the side following his arrival earlier in the week.

He could replace Dean Brill in goal, as the current number one has been linked with a move away from Kenilworth Road.

The home side's team will feature many of the 11 new players that arrived at the club just 24 hours before the season kicked off.

Lewis Emanuel may be missing, however, with a thigh strain, but will more than likely take a seat on the bench.

Mick Harford will also be without former Queens Park Rangers winger, Richard Langley, as he is on trial at Southend United.

Ones to watch
Jamie Forrester
has yet to score in a competitive game for County in his two appearances so far and will be aiming to make it third time lucky.

He will be hoping that Notts see quite a bit of action in and around the penalty area, because that is where he shines.

Knock downs and hold-up play from his strike partner, Delroy Facey will play a huge part in deciding whether he can convert his poacher's instinct into goals.

Sam Parkin has started the season in great form, netting twice in as many league games.

The 27-year old striker has a very good track record and has guaranteed goals pretty much everywhere he has played.

Battle: Butcher will have a tough battle with Nicholls in midfield...
County's defence will have to watch out, because Parkin is a threat from set-pieces with his aerial strength.

He demonstrated this against both Gillingham and Port Vale by scoring headed goals in both.

Key battle
Richard Butcher
will have to work hard to overcome the Hatters' captain, Kevin Nicholls, in the centre of the park.

It is well known that Butcher likes to get forward, and Nicholls will try to ensure that his attempts are limited.

The ex-Leeds skipper works at minimising his opponents' productivity, meaning that quick service to the wide-men could prove vital to Notts getting forward, as it has done so far.

Ticket information
Supporters can pay on the day at a price of £22 for adults, £17 concessions, £12 for 10-16-year olds, and £7 for under-tens and 'golden seniors' (over 65-years).

Betting
Luton are odds on to take all three points at 8/11, whereas Notts are at a lengthy 3/1 according to Ladbrokes. A price of 12/5 is offered for a draw.

Jamie Forrester is also offered at a price of 8/1 to be the game's first goal-scorer, which could be worth a punt.
