Southend United Youth Team manager, Ross MacLaren has today agreed to terminate his employment at Roots Hall after accepting the role of assistant manager to Thordarson at the ‘Lane, where he will replace John Gaunt - who will revert back to running the COE.

Whilst it was first understood that Gudjon would have to work with the backroom staff already in place, the Iceman has made moves – despite being snubbed by Noel Blake earlier in the week – to sign up his own right hand man for the forthcoming 2005/06 campaign.

News of the Scot's appointment was broken in Southend earlier today, with many of the club’s youngsters said to be ‘stunned’ by the sudden departure of MacLaren, pictured.

The former Derby County and Aston Villa assistant is understood to have favoured a move closer towards his family – settled in the Midlands – and another crack at senior league football when he considered the post at the ‘Lane.

MacLaren, a former player with Glasgow Rangers, leaves Roots Hall after just a year with the club.
