League Two: The final shake-up

Last updated : 08 May 2005 By Rob Davies
Going into the final weekend of the season in League Two, and not one team was certain of promotion. For four teams - namely Yeovil Town, Scunthorpe Utd, Swansea City and Southend Utd - it promised to be an entertaining, nerve-wracking and eventful 90 minutes.

And this was exaclty how it proved to be.

Bara: Going to the big leagues
All four sides went in with a chance of winning the title, but all four knew that they could easily have been consigned to the playoffs.

And, in an inspired bit of foresight, NCM's Richard Brown got his promotion predictions spot-on on Friday, when he suggested that then-third placed Southend would be the team consigned to the playoffs.

The Shrimps' were held to a 1-1 draw at mid-table Grimsby Town, meaning they will now have to undergo the lottery of the playoffs.

Swansea - the team ranked fourth at the start of play - were promoted in third position, thanks to a 26 second goal from veteran winger Adrian Forbes. They joined Yeovil - promoted as Champions after a resounding 3-0 home win over Lincoln - and second-placed Scunthorpe, who drew 0-0 at Shrewbury Town.

The Iron's Ian Baraclough - released by the Magpies last summer - will now be pitting his wits in a league above his former club next season, with the veteran recently handed a new one-year deal.

Swansea's promotion was soured in bizarre fashion though, when their French goalkeeper Willy Gueret was arrested after the Swans' 1-0 win over Bury at Gigg Lane.

The 31-year-old was nicked after allegedly swearing at a police officer. The newly-promoted club are said to be livid at the treatment of both their players and fans' after the game and are registering an official complaint.

Meanwhile, Darlington's 3-1 win over Cheltenham was not enough to get them into the playoffs, as they missed out on goal difference to Northampton Town, who comfortably beat already-relegated Kidderminster 3-0.

Northampton will now take-on a reeling Southend, with Maccesfield facing total-football advocates Lincoln City in the other playoff fixture.

In less exciting waters of the division, Keith Curle (pictured above right) managed to win his first game in charge of Chester City, beating Oxford Utd - another side to have appointed a new manager in Brian Talbot - 1-0.

Meanwhile Curle's old side, Mansfield Town, lost out 2-1 at Leyton Orient, meaning the Stags' - widely tipped for promotion until the appointment of axeman Carlton Palmer - finished the campaign in 13th position, six ahead of the Magpies.
