League Two team of the weekend

Last updated : 31 March 2008 By Gary Moss
Goalkeeper - Alan Marriott, Lincoln City. It may be a shock to see the
goalkeeper who conceded the most goals over the weekend make it into NCM's team of the weekend. But it was like the Battle of the Alamo at London Road. Posh put Lincoln to the sword with an astonsihing 25 shots being rained on the Imps' goal. United hit the target 18 times with Marriott making a string of fine saves to stop this one becoming a cricket score. The City custodian is out-of-contract in the summer and a performance like this may help him secure a new deal at Sincil Bank.

Defender
- Shaun Brisley, Macclesfield Town. The flying right-back had a stunning game at Moss Rose as the Silkmen overcame fellow strugglers Accrington Stanley 2-1. A brace from the young gun opened his Macc account in only his first season in the Football League. The win here could just about be enough to secure Keith Alexander's men safety. If not, they are edging closer nonetheless.

Defender
- Rory McArdle. Rochdale. McArdle is quickly building up a fine reputation in League Two for his no nonsense defensive style for Dale this season. A clean sheet over play-off rivals Brentford sets them in good stead for their midweek clash with Bradford. A 2-0 win at Griffin Park was helped by the 21-year-old's aerial dominance at the back. Another superb showing.

Defender
- Mike Edwards, Notts County. The Magpies defensive performamce just keeps getting better and better with just one goal conceded in their last six outings. Edwards has made gradual steps back to form since returning from injury and never put a foot wrong on derby day at Meadow Lane. He kept Mansfield's Micky Boulding, one of the deadliest strikers in the division, quiet all game. With Michael Johnson and Edwards both in form, the slip to the Conference looks highly unlikely. They are in safe hands.

Defender
- Ben Futcher, Bury. The Shakers have crept up to midtable safety in recent weeks and the scoring exploits of Andy Bishop has taken all the headlines. But former Peterborough man, Futcher, deserves some credit for marsahlling Alan Knill's back four at New Meadow on Saturday. His organisational skills have been a huge factor in seeing the side from Gigg Lane steer away from danger.

Midfielder -
Joe Colbeck, Bradford City. A goal against his former club Darlington at the weekend sealed a fantastic weekend for Colbeck and the Bantams with a 3-1 win over the fourth-placed Quakers. Dave Penney showed Colbeck the door earlier this season after an unsuccessful loan spell. And there will be no greater feeling for the middle man than to blunt their hopes of automatic promotion with the killer third goal.

Midfielder
- Albert Adomah, Barnet. Plucked from non-league and proving a fine asset as the Bees continue to climb away from the wrong end of league ladder. Three goals for Paul Fairclough's Barnet was enough to kill off bottom side Wrexham at Underhill. Adomah caused havoc down the wing for Brian Little's Welshmen. A thorn in their side and a thorn in their survival hopes. His trickery was a constant nightmare.

Midfielder -
Steven Fletcher, Chesterfield. Commanding. Dawson scored one and played a pivotal role in the Spirites 3-0 victory over Dagenham and Redbridge. Lee Richardson will be mindful the destiny of the final play-off slot is in Rochdale's hands but continuing to win will only help their. A superb showing from Dawson who broke up the play well and started many attacks.

Midfielder -
Nathan Arnold, Mansfield Town. The Stag's best hope of breaking Notts' resolute defence at Meadow Lane. Arnold caused problems for County full-back Adam Tann all afternoon and hit the cross-bar in the closest Town came to breaking the deadlock. Moved back to the wing after a brief spell up front, he looked to have gained confidence from his switch. As pacey as ever but more likely to produce the all important end product.

Striker -
Jon Newby, Morecambe. It has been a frustrating season for the Shrimps attacker with only 12 starts and 22 substitute cameo roles under Sammy McIllory. But given the nod in the last two outings has seen Morecambe collect four points and Newby net four including a hat-trick in Saturday's 5-1 demolition of crisis club Rotherham United. Nine goals in his 12 starts - surely he must play more.

Striker
- Aaron McLean, Peterborough United. A milestone weekend for the Posh front man. His fine brace helped United to their 4-0 drubbing of Lincoln. The striker's double takes his season tally to 31 goal in all competitions. With 27 strikes in the league, McLean has targeted the 30 mark in the league alone as the season draws to a conclusion. His continued inclusion in NCM's best eleven, shows what a fine season he has enjoyed for the league leaders already.
