Jason Beardsley... Who are ya!?

Last updated : 06 July 2008 By Richard Brown

While the Magpies' playing staff spunk their summer holidays away swapping sweet consonants with Carol Vorderman, you'd be forgiven for thinking Notts' sixth summer signing had slipped into Meadow Lane unnoticed.

Fear not though, as NCM again haul themselves away from their close season game of Boggle to bring you the low down on Charlie McParland's first loan signing of the summer, Derby County youngster Jason Beardsley.

Name: Jason Beardsley

Date of Birth: 12 July, 1989

Place of Birth: Burton, Derbyshire

Position: Defender

Former clubs: Derby County

Young hopeful: Beardsley hopes to make his league debut this season...
Whilst McParland's summer signings have had a more adult mature air to them, the arrival of teenager Jason Beardsley will help stop Notts' list of new recruits looking something akin to the cast of Last of the Summer Wine.

And at just 18 years old, time - if not first team experience - is something full-back Jason Beardsley has firmly on his side as the highly-rated youngster jets in as cover for the crocked Stephen Hunt.

Hunt, who deputised at left-back at times last season, went under the surgeon's knife earlier this week to remedy the groin injury that's troubled the former Southampton man since the closing stages of last season.

Despite regular appearances in the Rams' reserve and youth set ups, the challenge of the first team has proved too big a hurdle for the youngster, whose only taste of the first team was in last year's League Cup.

The full back -who operates at either right or left back -enjoyed a sixty-minute run out as the Rams were dumped out of the Carling Cup by Championship opposition, Blackpool after sudden-death in a penalty shootout.

That experience will have only buoyed the youngster, however, who would go on to be named an unused substitute in three of Derby's league games from last season's disastrous Premier League campaign.

Since then though the youngster has continued his push for a first team place, and has taken the obvious step in heading out on loan to the lower reaches of the Football League.

And in doing so, the former Rams scholar - who turns 19 next week - follows Magpies legend Michael Johnson in making the short trip up Brian Clough Way, a factor, Beardsley admits, was a massive draw in agreeing to join the Magpies' League Two preparations.

"I am really looking forward to it and I know Michael Johnson from Derby,"

Beardsley told the Nottingham Evening Post.

"He has vast experience and he is great to get on with.

"When you are with older players who have been there and done it, it really helps the younger lads and gets the best out of you. It is now or never for me really.

Fresh from penning his three-month loan deal before the weekend, the option has already been explored to extend the defender's loan deal until the end of the season.

"I would say I am an attacking ball player, I like getting forward and helping

out the winger in front of me," he said.

"If Paul Jewell calls me back after three months I have done well or maybe it will be extended and I can keep gaining experience here."

With a wealth of full-backs, playmakers and wingers now at the Magpies' disposal, the long-suffering County fans will surely be hoping to abandon the convent-esque football that's harvested a whole lot of crosses but very little scoring in recent years.

Although as today's show draws to a close, the line on everyone's lips now will surely plead: 'Another striker please, Carol.'
