International round-up

The Magpies had two of their squad members in international duty over the past twenty-four hours, with Saul Deeney (Republic of Ireland) and David Pipe (Wales) both turning out for their respective countries at under-21 level.

Pipe in Welsh action
Saul Deeney, who beat former Magpies loan signing Wayne Henderson for the Republic’s number one jersey, played the complete ninety minutes in Ireland’s qualifying match in Israel earlier today.

Deeney’s goal was breached twice within the first ten minutes of the action: first by a Yaniv Azrane header and secondly by a Henry McStay own goal.

Despite McStay netting in the other end, Israel went on to win the match 3-1.

Wayne Henderson, on loan at Notts until the turn of the year, was an unused substitute for the Irish.

Meanwhile, Deeney’s team-mate at club level, David Pipe enjoyed opposite fortunes in his international endeavours with his native Wales.

Pipe, who captained the Welsh side, helped his Wales side to a 1-0 victory against their Austrian counterparts.

The match saw Austria’s Markus Berger settle the tie as he headed through his own net, scoring the only goal in the narrow 1-0 victory. Pipe was then replaced twenty-five minutes before the end of the match.

The 21-year old Notts man will miss the Magpies’ mid-week trip to Yeovil as he jets off to Austria for the return fixture in Wales’ qualifying campaign.

Neither Deeney nor Pipe will be available for tomorrow’s clash with Bristol Rovers due to their international commitments.
