Hurst the Shrew

Hurst cancelled his Notts County contract yesterday after a fall-out with manager Gudjon Thordarson, an act that has caused immediate panic among the Magpies faithful.

The 29-year-old has netted nine times this season, but hasn't featured since an altercation with Thordarson during the half-time interval at Wrexham led to him immediately being substituted.

It seemed clear that Hurst had a deal lined-up elsewhere, but it came as something of a surprise when it emerged today that it was lowly Shrewsbury Town who were to become the striker's ninth professional league club.

Hurst, though, is insistent that his latest move is the right one for his career.

"I'm looking forward to forming a partnership with them (manager Gary Peters and assistant Mick Wadsworth) and hopefully force myself into the team," he told the Shrewsbury official website.

"It's another oppurtunity to add goals to a football team.

"This season may well be one of consolidation, but it's a tight division and if you can get on a roll, get everyone confident and winning games then there's no reason why you can't climb the table very quickly."

Hurst becomes the third former Notts striker to play for Peters' side, following Duane Darby and Mark Stallard through the Gay Meadow gates, with the Shrewsbury manager delighted at his most recent capture.

"We'd agreed a deal with Notts County for Glynn to join us and the easiest way to do that was for them to cancel his contract yesterday and for him to come and sign for us today," said the Shrews boss.

"I've liked Glynn for a long time and tried to get him last summer, but couldn't quite afford him, but now we've managed to bring him in."

On his abrupt end to his Meadow Lane career, Hurst was adamant that the switch was best for all parties.

"There are a few factors but all I can say is I think the club wanted rid of me and I wanted to leave to so that opened a door for a move.

"I'd just like to wish everyone at Notts County FC all the best."

Hurst has penned a 18-contract with Shrewsbury and is expected to make his debut for Shrewsbury in three days time when they face Wrexham.

He is likely to face a swift return to Meadow Lane, with his new club set to visit Nottingham on January 21st.
