Hendon: Why I'd love to manage Notts

Fond memories: Hendon spoke fondly of his time with the club.
Former Notts County captain Ian Hendon has admitted he would relish the chance to return to Meadow Lane as manager of the Magpies - should the opportunity arise.

The defender made 96 appearances for the club, as well as captaining the side to the Third Division title under Sam Allardyce a decade ago.

This weekend Hendon, now 38, returns to Meadow Lane as manager of League Two strugglers Barnet, although he admits he would jump at the chance to manage the club he once captained.

"I've got strong ties with the club from my time there and that counts for a lot," he said.

"I had a brilliant year there as a player and to some extent my heart is still with the club because that my daughter was born during my time there.

"I'm not applying for the job in any way now, but if the opportunity ever came up to manage Notts then, of course, I'd love to.

"It's a good football club and stadium and overall facilities demands to be at a higher level than League Two."

Hendon made 45 appearances for the club during the record breaking 1997/98 season, as Allardyce's romped to the Third Division title by late March.

After a fall-out with Allardyce, however, Hendon left the club for Northampton Town, before going on to play for Sheffield Wednesday and Peterborough.

In 2003 he rejoined Barnet to captain the Bees to the 2005 Conference title, and in late December he replaced Paul Fairclough as manager at Underhill.

Having worked under the likes of Terry Venables, Peter Shreeves and Paul Jewell as a player though, the former right-back admits it was his time under Allardyce that best prepared him for management.

"Paul (Fairclough) is very different to any manager I've had in the past," he said.

"I've played under some great managers like Peter Shreeves and Terry Venables who knew everything there was to know, but all managers have their different traits.

"I've tried to take the best of every manager I've worked under and feed that into my own style, though.

"If I was going to emulate any manager though it would be Sam (Allardyce) because he tells it how it is and you knew exactly where you stood as a player.

"And if I ever needed any advice then I know Big Sam is only at the other end of the phone."

Since leaving Meadow Lane in March 1999, Hendon has scored managed three goals in just three games against the Magpies, including a brace in the Bees' 2-1 win at Underhill three years ago.

And despite still being registered as a Barnet player, Hendon played down his chances of a goalscoring return to Meadow Lane this weekend.

"Whatever my next game is will be my last because I've had my ankle reconstructed not long ago," he said.

"So I can assure Notts County fans won't be seeing Ian Hendon on the pitch this weekend!"
