Heff Says No To New Contract

Paul Heffernan’s current contract runs out in the summer and he therefore would be free to leave the club; although Notts would be entitled to some compensation given he is under 24.

But Gary Mills today spoke of his determination to keep Heffernan at Notts, coming only a week after he blasted four goals against
Stockport last weekend.
But the manager has warned he will have a tough decision on his hands if the 22 year old takes too long to make a decision.

“I desperately want Paul Heffernan to stay. I made him an offer that I feel is very good, which he has turned down.” Mills told the Nottingham Evening Post.

“We offered him a two-and-a-half-year contract on improved terms to what he is on now but he has chosen not to accept it.”

Heffs: Loves The Club, But Is He On His Way?
But despite the leading goal-scorer this season, revealing he “loves the club” and “wants to stay” earlier this week, Heffernan may well be ‘testing the water’ to see if he could earn a more lucrative contract at another club.

"We know what he can do and we do not want him to leave. I would be happy to negotiate with him over things. There is always room for that but I don't want his decision to be about money.” Mills told the NEP.

“We have offered him more money, but he should not make his decision over the matter of a few hundred pounds more he might be being offered elsewhere.” said Mills.

Mills has also conceded that he knows Heffernan has to make the choice of staying or leaving for the right reasons and that whenever Heffernan goes, whether he stays or goes, the player needs to somewhere where he is wanted, comfortable and playing well. Whether this will be at Notts remains to be seen………..

But Mills has also stated that “Notts is a club that is going places and I want Paul to be part of that.” And he offered Heffernan some open, honest advice by telling him that; “Money is important but the grass isn't automatically always greener elsewhere.

There are lots of players in this game who have moved for money and have ended up dropping out of the game when it hasn't worked out. I think Heff would be happy if he stayed here.”

Let’s hope that Mills can keep Heffernan beyond this season as he is obviously an important part of the current Notts team and the strike force would be non-existent at current without Heffs.
