Gudjon struggling to re-sign players

With every single member of his playing squad bar Kevin Pilkington out of contract at the end of the current season, Thordarson is said to have opened talks with his ‘priority' players, including Mike Edwards, David Pipe (pictured) and captain Julien Baudet, with a view to extending their current deals.

Despite talks, however, the club are currently struggling to persuade the players to  sign on a fresh deal.

And with interest now amassing from a number of League One clubs for all of the said players, the Icelandic manager admits that the battle to keep the players is an increasingly tough one.

"I have to make sure I can offer them my best possible deal. It is a decision they will have to make sooner or later because I have to sort the backbone. If they reject us, it is better to know early than late in the spring or summer, because there are other options out there," said Thordarson, speaking to the Nottingham Evening Post today.

"I know players have been in discussions with clubs in the league above. They now they have to decide whether it is better to stay with teams like us, who are trying to push for promotion, before making a final decision."

Whilst Thordarson is keen to persuade the trio to re-sign, he has admitted that he will be held to ransom by the stall-tactics employed by the players and their agents, already admitting that he has other experienced personnel in mind to cover his options, as it were.

"Losing two or three players who I see as my backbone will mean I have got to look elsewhere, but I have got options and there are other players I have been in touch with and already expressed some interest in.”

"It is a concern for me to deal with and the most important thing now is to get the backbone sorted in my team," he added.
