Friars teams-up with former boss

Friars has made just five first-team appearences for the Magpies this season, the last of which came in the 3-0 Boxing Day defeat at Oxford Utd.

The 20-year-old left-sided centre back netted his first ever senior goal in a 2-0 win over Stockport in December, but the swift emergence of Dan Martin has meant that he has recently fell down the pecking order.

Friars will now team-up with the man who gave him his first-ever professional contract in the summer of 2004. The Northern Ireland under-21 international - who is keen for first-team football - has already spent time on-loan with AFC Telford earlier this campaign.

Friars was the captain of the Magpies' Midlands FA Cup winning side that featured future first-teamers such as Kelvin Wilson, Shane McFaul and Shaun Harrad - but he has yet to establish himself as a first-team regular since signing a two-year contract, making a total of 15 appearences.
