Former boss Thompson made reduntant

Thompson has been working as Cambridge manager since December after a long time spent out-of-work.

The big man
The 45-year-old was unable to halt the U's slide though, seeing his side relegated from the Football League even before their recent 10 point deduction for entering administration.

And, with Cambridge in severe financial trouble, the decison was made by administrators today to make Thompson - whose contract was set to expire shortly - plus two other members of the coaching staff reduntant.

The former Lincoln boss worked alongside Murphy - infamous for not being very good - in the mid 1990s at Meadow Lane.

And, even before being made reduntant today, Thompson is reportedly one of the front-runners for the manager's chair this time around - to the general worry of Magpie supporters.

Aside from the fact that it'd be interesting to see a manager and the chairman at the same club have exactly the same name, there's little else in Thompson's favour when he puts forward a case to be Notts County's new manager.

Former Stoke City and Barnsley boss Gudjon Thordason remains the current favourite, though, meaning unlucky Thompson could again be set for another long spell on the sidelines.

Expect a BIG feature on the race for the Notts County manager's chair to come here on NCM in the next few days.
