Football League statement

Sir Brian Mawhinney, Chairman of the Football League, made this statement after the meeting.

“Whilst company administration is principally a matter for the courts it remains the League’s duty to ensure that insolvency procedures do not distort fair competition between clubs. Clubs in administration derive a competitive advantage over their rivals by virtue of being protected from their historic debt. Such a situation cannot be allowed to continue indefinetly.

“The Board also considered the implications of prolonged administration on the integrity of the League Championship and decided that in future no club would be allowed to commence two consecutive seasons in administration. Furthermore, no administration will be permitted to exceed eighteen months duration.

“This was a unanimous decision by the League’s Board of Directors and represents the administrator’s last opportunity to safeguard the continued membership of one of the League’s founding clubs.Hopefully this further period of grace will encourage everybody involved to re-double their efforts to ensure a satisfactory conclusion to this issue.”
