Fans Forum overview

Last updated : 17 April 2009 By Dane Vincent

Following a few damning comments about certain individuals was a prompted statement covering what the current board had achieved in their time at the club. Examples consisted of allowing fans to return to the Kop and attaining a lease on a training pitch. It was also mentioned that a full scholarship scheme for the youth team will be in place for next season.

Ian McParland then took the microphone to speak about a number of issues - quite comically at points. He stated: "I don't dislike the press; I just don't like speaking to them." Moving on, he spoke about his passion for the club and how much he wants the club to succeed.

After 15 minutes, in which the crowd were growing a little agitated, questions were eventually put forward to the panel. The first person asked why the season ticket prices didn't fall alongside VAT. Armstrong-Holmes stated that there was going to be a rise in January, supporting the decision to freeze prices.

This progressed into a discussion about high match day prices. The Chairman defended this too, adding that many clubs charge around £20 entrance fees throughout the league - away fans in particular.

Subsequent to a protest from one member of the audience who wanted to move onto football related matters, Ian McParland took to the microphone again. It was revealed that John Thompson will be utilised as a centre-back next season and that Adam Nowland is likely to have surgery on his back - casting doubt over his future.

Armstrong-Holmes was asked about the decision to pay-off former Physio John Haselden. A £25,000 figure was rubbished and McParland defended the decision.

He moved on to talk about this particular area of the club and revealed that current member of staff in this role, Paul Smith, is leaving to join Sheffield Wednesday as their first-team Physio. The club will receive compensation when this goes through.

A question about the potential investors was raised. Armstrong-Holmes summarised the interactions to date, beginning in October, 2008. The latest news is that both parties have exchanged financial information.

Returning again to football matters McParland spoke about the state of the club when he arrived, questioning the attitude of some of the players on the books at the time.

Stephen Hunt's future was then brought into the equation. Notts' boss kept his cards close to his chest commenting on the defender's long-term injury. He continued to say: "No decision has been made on any players."

When asked about Nottingham Rugby Club's financial situation, Armstrong-Holmes revealed that they have been allowed to play at Meadow Lane at a reduced rate.

Prior to the intermission various topics were raised about stewarding and safety issues, including the standing problems in the Kop. There is set to be a meeting on April 20 about such matters.

INTERMISSION

Former Supporters' Trust Chairman Stuart Rolley took to the floor, providing one of few heated encounters. He brought up the decision to budget for crowds of 5,000 despite concerns being raised at the time. Armstrong-Holmes disclosed that it was a "calculated risk", but progressed to say that they felt attaining such crowds was a feasible proposition, especially if the team performed well. "Overall income streams matched what we had budgeted for," he added, talking about the latest financial figures.

Rolley's next subject was the much discussed "obscene hand gesture". Armstrong-Holmes carried on to say it was a "hand gesture" and that it should have been taken up with the correct authorities at the time if it was offensive. The atmosphere grew slightly tense at this point and the Chairman accused Rolley of bullying a member of staff during the interval. Interactions ensued in an intense fashion as certain clusters of the audience began to express their disapproval of the Chairman's aforementioned actions.

Once this had settled McParland received some criticism from one supporter who felt that many other bosses down the years would have been sacked with his track record. A number of other managers were suggested as possible replacements. County's Manager explained that he took responsibility for the poor results and that it was not good enough. Reassuringly he added: "If we weren't creating chances I'd be worried."

Another former Trust board member Keri Usherwood was next to speak. His first point was to question Armstrong-Holmes' involvement in the closure of the Centre of Excellence, to which he responded: "I wasn't present at any of those board meetings."

His next question brought up a rumour that had been circulating, which suggested that the players had not been paid. McParland answered first, saying: "If they hadn't been paid they'd be banging my door down." The Chairman then stated that all members of staff at the club had received their wages.

A concern about the commercial department was the next topic of discussion as a fan enquired about who had replaced the former Commercial Manager Sally Brearley. Armstrong-Holmes revealed that they had not brought anyone else into the role and that two members of the sales team had been working sufficiently.

This point was used to praise this season's sponsors, Forward Pest Control and Marstons Smooth, and then the new shirt sponsors for next term, Vandanel, were revealed. This will be officially announced later today. Special credit was given to Lynn Lawson from the club shop for her involvement in the deal.

Looking ahead to next year's campaign again, McParland declared that he had not yet spoken to Chesterfield about the possibility of bringing Phil Picken to the club permanently, although he did speak fondly of the player.

Financial details are set to be released next week once they have been approved by shareholders and the board. Armstrong-Holmes explained that they were in a good state.

The final major topic arose when McParland was asked about the minimum requirements for next season. Although he failed to directly answer the question, he declared that they would be aiming for promotion. In addition he mentioned that a 20 goal striker would be hugely important in achieving this.

A recording of the Fans Forum is expected to appear on the club's official site tomorrow.
