Fairclough puts pen to paper

The first of the three out of contract players offered new deals at Meadow Lane has signed today, with young forward Ben Fairclough signing a one-year deal at the club. Fairclough was offered a new deal a week ago along with defender Stephen Hunt, who is yet to sign, whilst highly rated winger Myles Weston continues to stall on a contract which has been on the table for much of the season.

Fairclough, nephew of former Forest defender Chris, signed for the Magpies last summer after a lengthy trial period following his release from Nottingham Forest. He made just two starts last season, with a further nine substitute appearances, but largely impessed fans with his tireless work rate and electric pace, despite not yet finding the back of the net in black and white. He did, however, score past his former club in a Meadow Lane friendly last August.

Manager Ian McParland has used Fairclough sparingly, but he is viewed by the staff at Meadow Lane as a promising young player, and it is expected he'll find more time on the pitch this season. He will, however, have to get past Delroy Facey and Sean Canham in the pecking order, as well as at least one new forward who McParland is expected to be bringing into the club. BBC Radio Humberside yesterday announced that they expect Jonathan Forte, who had two successful loan spells at Meadow Lane last term, to be allowed to leave Scunthorpe United on a free transfer, with the Magpies at the front of the queue for his signature.

NCM will bring you any news on the futures of Stephen Hunt and Myles Weston, as well as any new signings, when we get it.
