Facey off target as Grenada head home

Delroy Facey made his international debut tonight for Grenada, but missed two glorious chances as the Spice Boyz crashed 2-0 to Haiti, effectively sealing their exit from the CONCACAF Gold Cup. While they still have to face Honduras, it will take a miracle for the Grenadians to overcome their goal difference of -6 and head through in 2nd place in the group, or as one of the best placed 3rd teams.

The match at DC United's RFK Stadium started brightly for Facey, as a stinging shot from the edge of the box forced a fine save from the Haiti 'keeper, but it was all downhill from there for Facey and his side. On 13 minutes a harmless looking header from Fabrice Noel somehow deceived the goalkeeper and trickled in to give the Haitians the lead, and they had numerous chances to double it. However, Facey should've levelled just before half time but demonstrated the thing which blighted his first season at Meadow Lane so much, an unrivalled ability to miss open goals. A deep cross deceived everyone and Facey appeared to only have to tap the ball into the empty net, but managed to sky it high over the bar with his left foot.

The second half was something of a non-event until on 78 minutes James Marcelin capitalised on some horrendous Grenadian defending to slot the ball home and seal a win for Haiti. Facey then had another glorious chance to hit the target on his international debut, but for some reason decided to pass the ball across goal to no one in particular when clean through. The result leaves the Grenadians rooted to the bottom of the Group B table, and barring a performance of Herculean proportions in the upcoming match against Honduras, Facey will be joining up with his teammates mid-way through their trip to Austria.
