Elliot extends Magpies stay

The move comes as no particular surprise to many, especially after seeing the ‘keeper turn-in an outstanding performance on his home league debut for the Magpies a week ago.

Charlton youngster, Rob Elliot
This, correlated with a basic lack of cover for first-choice Saul Deeney, sees Elliot extend his Magpies stay for a third and final month, a deal that will see the Charlton man stay with the Magpies just a week short of the end of the 2004/05 campaign.

Returning to The Valley after County’s penultimate match with Bury (April 30th), Elliot will miss the concluding match of the season against Cambridge United.

Having made three starts in his time at the ‘Lane – as well as a run-out from the bench he’d probably sooner forget – the teenage goalkeeper has been perhaps unfortunate to step into a side so low on confidence, conceding nine goals in just three appearances between the sticks. A stat that by no means represents the progress made by the rookie.

The move comes a week after the transfer deadline closed for all clubs. Although, because of Elliot having already been at the club for the past two months, the transfer complies with the rules of transfer ‘window’ applicable to Football League clubs at present.

Commenting on Elliot’s extended stay, Ian Richardson said "Rob did well in his spell in the team, and was a little unlucky to concede as many as he did."

"He will push Saul for this final month, and he has the ability that if he gets in, he won't let us down," he added.

The 18-year old will remain with the club until the end of April, before Elliot returns to his club following the home match with Bury.
