Edwards to keep it steady in midfield

Speaking in the 'Nottingham Evening Post' Notts Assistant Manager John Gannon hailed the former Hull City mans recent performances in the holding role, vacated by Matt Somner after he was dropped.

Gannon... Revealed Edwards will remain in midfield
"Mike was outstanding for us in midfield. He covered a lot of ground and his being flexible is great for the team."

Edwards was superb as Notts started the season in great fashion, and despite the team sliding out of the reach of a Playoff position, his consistency hasn't been questioned.

However, the emergence of young gun Stephen Hunt saw manager Steve Thompson with a selection headache. Edwards or Hunt couldn't be dropped, and Thompson has always favoured performing with Captain Alan White in his defence.

Edwards was the fall guy, moving into an unfavoured midfield position, a role he performed for half of last season under Gudjon Thordarson.

The majority of support would agree they prefer the determined customer in the backline, but Gannon's praise means he is set to finish the campaign in midfield.

"He is an ideal option for us, depending on how people are doing and how we can use him from week to week"

Speaking in the match day program ahead of Saturday's 0-0 bore draw with local rivals Mansfield Town, Edwards said of the role: "I like to get stuck in and even though I enjoy playing in the centre of midfield, I feel that my best position is at centre-back.

"When I'm in the backline I understand where the ball is going to fall and what runs are going to be made by the strikers."
