Edwards stays

The defender-cum-midfielder was originally set to see his contract with the Magpies expire come late June, leaving him – along with thousands of his fellow professionals – seemingly in the lurch over their futures.

Edwards: Steady now!
However, after lengthy negotiations, the club have today revealed that the former Grimsby man has inked a fresh two-year deal, heavily underlining his importance to Gudjon Thordarson's future plans.

After signing from Grimsby Town in 2004, Edwards endured a horrific injury that wrote-off the whole of the 2004/05 campaign post-September for him, with the injury restricting him to just ten starts for the Magpies.

A strong pre-season under new boss Thordarson, however, saw the appropriately named ‘Steady Eddy' return to full fitness, becoming a near ever-present for the Magpies last term, with his consistent displays helping to justify the offer of a deal that will see him remain with the club until June 2008.

Edwards becomes the sixth player already signed up for next season, joining David Pipe, Kevin Pilkington, Dan Martin, Liam Needham, Jake Sheridan and Tommy Hannigan in the ranks for next season.
