DERRY APPOINTED NOTTS MANAGER

The worst kept secret at Meadow Lane is finally out - former Notts midfielder and local boy Shaun Derry has been appointed as the club's new manager, with former Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott joining as his assistant.

In a short statement, the chairman Ray Trew confirmed that Derry was not immediately considered by the Notts board, but upon his application for the job and further discussions he was pinpointed as the club's prime candidate.

There is no word on either the length of contract Derry has signed or whether he intends to make himself available as a player, but he will be in charge for Saturday's FA Cup first round visit to Hartlepool United - ironically where defeats cost both Martin Allen and Keith Curle their jobs at Meadow Lane.
