Deeney's latest trial

Last updated : 18 August 2005 By Rob Davies
Deeney is to spend two days with the Robins in an attempt to finally find himself a new club, after turning down the offer of a new two-year deal with the Magpies last summer. The Irishman is currently on a week-to-week deal at Meadow Lane.

Since turning down the initial deal at Meadow Lane, Deeney's advisors have been working hard to secure the highly-rated stopper a deal away from Meadow Lane.

However, the 22-year-old now finds himself in the somewhat surprising situation of being in limbo, with the transfer window set to slam shut at the end of the month.

The Irish under-21 star will be therefore extremely keen to impress City boss Brian Tinnion, who has been looking for quality back-up for first choice stopper Steve Phillips.

Deeney had previously spent time on trial at Crewe Alexandra, though two clean-sheets for Dario Gradi's second-string weren't enough to earn him a permanent contract for the Championship side. He will now hope for better luck as he makes the trip south to Bristol.

After signing for Notts County as a 17-year-old, Deeney finally made the number one jersey his own last season with a number of assured displays between the sticks, making a total of 37 appearences.

New boss Gudjon Thordarson, however, has now signed Kevin Pilkington as first choice stopper, but needs to wait until Deeney is gone before he can sign permanent cover for the former Mansfield man, with the Iceman keen on Shaun Marshall, who has spent the past few weeks on trial with the Magpies.

Notts are unwilling to release Deeney as they would be entitled to compensation - believed to be in the region of £75k-80k - for the young keeper.
