Deeney's exit made official

With Deeney's current contract is set to expire at the end of the month, the Irishman has turned down the offer of a fresh two-year deal.

The goalkeeper becomes the second player to leave the Magpies this summer, following Wycombe new-boy Stefan Oakes to the exit door.

We gotta get out of this place...
New manager Gudjon Thordarson has been aware of his decision for some time, which explains the signing of Kevin Pilkington today. The former Mansfield stopper will be a straight replacement for the departing Irishman.

Deeney enjoyed by far his most succesful season for the Magpies in the past campaign, making the No.1 jersey his own with a series of fine performances.

He had previously spent much of his time at Meadow Lane on the fringes, since signing as a trainee in 1999.

The 22-year-old has attracted a host of interest from a range of clubs, but is believed to have signed a pre-contract agreement with Sheffield United.

Wherever he goes, though, Notts will be entitled to compensation as he is aged under 24, with a fee being decided by tribunal if neccesary.

As unreliable as tribunals are, it is believed that Notts could get anywhere between the region of £50,000 - £75,000 for the youngster.

We wish Saul all the best and thank him for his efforts during his time at Meadow Lane.

It's proved a busy day for goalkeepers, with former Notts stopper Steve Mildenhall signing a two-year deal at League Two rivals Grimsby Town today.

Mildenhall had been playing at Oldham Athletic before being released this summer. The coming season will be the first time since 2001 that Notts will no longer be paying the former Swindon shot-stopper.
