Deeney move derails

The on-going saga of Deeney’s prolonged hopes of a move away continued today, after the Railwaymen's manager made it all but clear that there was simply no space for the ‘keeper at Gresty Road with the capture of – albeit on loan – highly-rated youngster Ross Turnbull.

The much-talented Turnbull – an England youth international – joined the Railwaymen until the end of 2005 earlier today, with a view to an extension until the end of the 05/06 campaign, leaving the future of Deeney very much up in the air.

Deeney – an international himself with the Republic of Ireland under-21 side – had been training with the Championship side after turning down an offer on improved terms here at Meadow Lane.

The trial proved a relative success for the want-away ‘keeper although, with Gradi succeeding in signing the Middlesbrough youngster, Deeney’s flagging hopes of a move away now seem extremely slim.

Saul – who currently resides on a week-to-week contract at Meadow Lane – made 37 appearances for County last season, proving a revelation between the sticks after forcing out fellow countrymen, Wayne Henderson.

He now finds himself not only in a battle for a new club ahead of the forthcoming campaign, but also a fight for first team football when considering recent-signing Kevin Pilkington’s form of late.

The athletic shot-stopper, 22, is now likely to return for training with the County squad prior to their opening day match against Torquay United.

NCM continue to wish Saul well in his search for a new club.
