Davey looking for swift appointment

Since Thordarson's (below) abrupt departure on Thursday night, the Magpies board have been forced into a quick-fire application process, that has already attracted over a hundred CV's.

Though many of those have been immediately discounted, Davey has been quietly impressed by the quality of applications that the Magpies have already received.

And, though he is aware that many of the candidates will have applied for some of the other nine available managerial positions in the bottom two leagues, Davey insists that they have received enough quality interest to appoint the new man within the next two weeks.

"Hopefully we will be appoint a new manager within a week to ten days," Davey told today's Nottingham Evening Post.

"We have had several hundred applications, many of which were from fans and such like. But there have also been a large number of serious applications.

"We have just had a Bank Holiday weekend, which doesn't help, but we are looking at the candidates that we have had applications from and will consider those that come in over the next few days, before drawing up a shortlist.

"We recognise the importance of getting a new man appointed as soon as possible. There are other clubs out there looking for managers."

Davey had previously stated that the board's target was to appoint a new manager within the next three weeks but, with Notts currently having just seven players under contract for next season, there is growing fear that Notts will be at the back of the queue when it comes to bolstering their thread-bare squad.

Meanwhile, Grimsby Town became the sixth League Two club without a manager today when their boss, former Notts chief Russell Slade, walked-away after refusing to sign a new deal.

Slade's team were defeated 1-0 by Cheltenham in the playoff final at the weekend but he had been frustrated by his lack of financial backing, after two years in-charge at the Mariners.

Though an unlikely return to Meadow Lane has been touted, the Nottingham-born boss remains favourite for the post at League One Yeovil Town and could be unveiled by the end of the week.

Ian McParland, Keith Curle and Mick Harford have all emerged as early front-runners for the Notts vacancy, though former player Mark Robson was ruled-out earlier today when he was unveiled as a key element of Charlton Athletic's three-pronged managerial team.
