Former Manchester United defender, John Curtis is currently training with the Magpies.
Curtis, 30, had spent some of pre-season with the team, making one appearance in the friendly with Nottingham Forest.
Although there are no signs that Ian McParland will swoop for the experienced player, he would be an ideal replacement should there be any further injuries in the back line.
Extremely versatile, Curtis can play anywhere across the back line, as well as in the midfield holding role.
His former clubs include Man United, Barnsley (loan), Blackburn Rovers, Sheffield United (loan), Leicester City, Portsmouth, Preston North End (loan), Forest and Queens Park Rangers.
