Billy: Platt's All That

Last updated : 23 September 2003 By Rob Davies
Platt headed his first goal for County in Saturday's draw against Tranmere, a goal which earned Notts a point.

And Dearden believes that goal could be the first of many for the 25 year old hitman, who he signed from Rochdale this summer.

Platt never got into double figures in terms of league goals at Spotland, but he did manage nine last season.

But Dearden thinks things could be different at Meadow Lane.

"I do think there is more to come from Clive,"
Dearden told the Nottingham Evening Post. "I am glad he got his goal, because he deserved it.

"He has never been a prolific goalscorer at his other clubs. But I do believe that he can be. I think he is the sort of player who can get a reasonable number of goals.

"With the greatest of respect to his previous clubs, I don't think the calibre of the other players in their squads was particularly great.

"Players like Clive are the sort of people that will flourish on good delivery.

"I am not sure that he will have had that before. But I am sure we have people here who can help him on that front.

"We have not always given him the best service up to now.

"But he has shown what he can do when he does have a decent delivery to work with."

The man, the legend.... Clivey Platt!
Dearden admits Platt hasn't had many chances to score yet for Notts, with the service not being up to scratch.

But he is certain that when the chances come his way, he will finish them off.

"We know about him missing the late chance to win the match at Barnsley but that was one chance," said Dearden.

"And, as long as we keep giving him those, like we did on Saturday, I am sure there are more goals in him.

"He is so powerful in the air, he is very strong. He played a key role in the first goal, with a flick on to Stall, and he was thoroughly deserving of the second goal, too. It was a vital one for us."

Dearden also praised Platt's work rate.

"All players are different, they all have different qualities," said Dearden. "But if everyone matched his work rate, it would be fantastic.

"That is also a big part of his game, hassling players, closing them down not giving them time on the ball.

"There was one moment, in the second half, where he ran about 20 or 30 yards to close somebody down on the far side, in front of the Jimmy Sirrel Stand.

"The fans gave him a big cheer, they loved that.

"But that is part of what he is about. Hopefully now he has got one goal, more will come. He has certainly earned it."

Couldn't agree more, Bill. Let's have another tonight Clive...
