Baudet is Thor's man

Baudet has acted as skipper throughout the club's pre-season programme, but was only confirmed as the permanent choice by Thordarson earlier today.

The big defender will replace Mike Whitlow, who is currently out injured with a long-term knee problem. The 37-year-old defender is expected to play more of a bit-part role this season, with the former Bolton man being slowly blended into a coaching role behind-the-scenes.

The new skipper
Baudet was always the expected choice of captain, after growing into the role at the end of last season, under Ian Richardson. The 26-year-old has become a firm favourite with the fans after signing from Rotherham last summer.

"Julien will be my captain for the season," Thordarson confirmed to the Official website.

"He has been captain over pre-season, and now he will lead the team into the proper season. Julien is a good pro, very disciplined and works hard. He has set a very good example out there on the pitch.

"I had to have a captain I had full trust in, and I have that with Julien. It is a big task, but he has the ability and leadership to be a good captain for me."

Baudet produced a number of consistent displays in what was a poor all-round season for many of his team-mates last year.

The Frenchman proved a formidable presence at the heart of the Magpies' defence, after originally being signed to play in midfield.

Meanwhile, Thordarson has taken former Cambridge goalkeeper Shaun Marshall on trial in his search for permanent cover for first-choice stopper Kevin Pilkington. The 26-year-old was released by Cambridge this summer as the U's sought to cut costs after relegation from the Football League.

He will feature along with a number of first-teamers in tonight's Bass Vase final against Burton Albion.

With the season's opener just two days away, Thordarson currently only has Saul Deeney as competition for Pilkington between the sticks. However, the Irishman is still believed to be seeking a move away from Meadow Lane after turning down the offer of a fresh two-year deal. He is currently on a week-to-week deal.
