Neal Ardley said “We were ready to go.

“Like a lot of teams, we already have a fixture backlog and you don’t want to have to rearrange any more.

“But for a 30-yard area of the pitch to get the game called off is frustrating.

“The ref wasn’t happy. He said anyone who tried to change direction on that area, or landed on it, could get a serious injury.

“Neil Cox went on it with his boots on and he felt the same way. He felt it was dangerous too.

“If myself and their manager Jim Bentley insisted the game went ahead and one of our players did their cruciate, I would never forgive myself.

“I couldn’t run on it myself because of the shoes I had on so I couldn’t make a judgement.

“But the referee and Coxy came to the same decision.”
