Title winning Sam to mix it up

Last updated : 21 June 2007 By Gary Moss

Position: Striker

Age:
29

Signed From:
Walsall

Strengths:
Power, pace, trickery and provider

The Trinidadian forward should really be an asset for the Magpies in the forthcoming campaign.

Sam...Impact player
He has pace and power but most of all he is a provider for others. On his day, he can terrify defences with his skill and trickery but he is a very hit and miss player.

The 29-year-old likes to drop in behind and links well with the midfield. He is not the kind of player who will stick around the box and wait for his chances.

If he doesn't get in the game early doors, he will go and hunt down the ball, perhaps explaining his below par career scoring record.

He is an impact player who when at his best can influence and change a game. He is good on the ball and difficult to mark, often mystifying defenders with what he will do next, and the same can be said of his team-mates.

He can either be brilliant or frustrating and the two can be fine line. He is unpredictable but his talent provides good variance.

Weaknesses:
Goalscoring

For all Sam's qualities, he has never really been a prolific goalscorer. He averages at 0.21 goals per league game in his career meaning the best you could hope for is ten goals this season in theory.

Notts are still crying out for a 20-goal a season striker, and I'm afraid to say, that is not Hector Sam.

He struck just seven times for Walsall last season as they marched to the title. As a result of his lack of goal exploits, he misses out on the chance of League One football with crowned champions Walsall this coming year.

What can he add to the Notts squad?
Sam will add both variance and options to the Notts squad.

He could be good from the bench late on if he's in right mood.

Sam...Gives variation

However, if Thompson opts to play his 4-3-3 formation, Sam could play a more prominent role.

His best chance of success will probably be alongside Lee where he can provide ammunition, whereas pairing with Dudfield may leave the box empty with both players preferring the drifting role.

He is another option in the squad who will add a little bit everything to the Notts squad.

The Mad Verdict:
The 29-year-old may not be the answer to all of Steve Thompson's problems up top, but he is still a fine addition to the Magpies squad.

At worst, he will keep favoured pairing Jason Lee and Lawrie Dudfield firmly on their toes.

He may not be the deadly striker Notts crave, but between the three of them (Sam, Dudfield and Lee), Thommo can be optimistic his side can muster up the goals needed for promotion this term.

Only time will tell whether the marksmen will be a hit with the County crowd, but allowing him a free role will bring the best out of him at Meadow Lane.

I cannot be anything other than optimistic about his signing as he has proven himself to be a success at this level many times before.

If Thommo can use him effectively, he will blend in well.
